“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” Psalms 37:23 KJV.
Can you tell exactly what comes to your mind when you hear that the steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD?
If you believe in the LORD, you would likely want to see Him order your steps. But do you know how He does that?
First of all, let’s look at what it means for one’s steps to be ordered, and how the LORD orders a man’s steps.

What does “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD” mean?
David said in Psalms 23:1 KJV, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” In Psalms 78:52, he spoke of how the Lord “made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.”
Two keywords to note from Psalm 37:23 are STEPS and ORDERED. We can relate with Shepherd and Sheep from the two most recent verses I quoted above.
Then look at it this way, The Shepherd ordered the steps of His Sheep.
The word “Ordered” is the same as guided, directed, established or led. The steps of a good man ARE ordered by the LORD therefore means that the Lord oversees the life of that good or righteous man.
Take note of the article ‘ARE’ in relation to the term, ’ORDERED’. That would mean that the order is an establishment; what God does in the life of that man is to direct his path.
How does The Lord order a man’s steps?
Having understood that the order is an establishment, it is important to know that there is a document called the scriptures. In the Scriptures, there are instructions, the Word and the Spirit, which are life in us, who believe.
King David sang in Psalms 119:103–105 KJV: “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Now, to the question, The Lord orders a man’s steps by His word and His Spirit. David had the words of the Spirit, and by faith we have the Spirit living and leading in us.
The scripture says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Romans 8:14 KJV.
And “Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.” Psalms 37:24 KJV
In essence, God takes pleasure in the way of those whose steps are established and guided by Him. They are called His Saints and He preserves them forever.
